The "Big Mac Index" is a playful guide to global exchange rates that the Economist puts out every January using data from the previous year. It is designed to measure purchasing power parity (PPP) between nations, using the price of a McDonald's Big Mac as the benchmark. It is a flawed method. It is light-hearted. Don't go crazy. The Economist's Big Mac index shows that the rand is undervalued by 62% against the dollar - which means it is the most underpriced major currency in the world. A decade ago, the rand was undervalued by "only" 39%. Since 1986, The Economist has been using McDonald's Big Mac burger prices to determine whether currencies are overvalued, or too cheap.
